The Engagement

LAUREN: Keith and I started talking about getting engaged around the 6-month mark. I mentioned to him that if we really did get engaged, I would want to have the ring, or at least the center stone, that my maternal grandfather, Stanley Weiss (Popop) had given to my grandmother, Cissie Weiss (Gaga)--they moved to Atlanta around the time I was born and I was lucky to have been able to spend so much time with them. I was very close to Gaga and am still very close to Popop, so the sentimental value was enormous. Additionally, Gaga and Popop were very happily married for 58 years before she passed away a few years ago, so I was hoping the ring would bring the same to me and Keith.

Anyway, Keith worked with my mom to purchase the ring from my family. For fun, because I knew it drove him crazy, I kept prodding Keith about the engagement. As a joke, I even put in his Palm Pilot "Brunch at Cathey's. Propose to Lauren." I knew he'd never see it since he never uses his Palm Pilot! We also kept joking about getting engaged with Gaga's ring but decided against it, since she had changed the original setting to something a little less attractive.

Keith designed the setting and waited for it to be ready. The first time he went to pick it up, the wrong head had been put on. Keith came home that day and

was in a really bad mood. Eventually, he told me he had gone to pick up that ring and it wasn't ready since they had messed up. He sent it back to the designer and told them to fix it right!

A few weeks later, Mother's Day weekend, Keith disappeared again, not telling me where he was going. I figured he was probably going to pick up the ring. He came back in a bad mood again, and I figured out what was going on -- that there were problems with the ring again and he had to send it back to the designer one more time!
